Resort focus-Shiga Kogen

@shigakogen.japan Instgram

Shiga Kogen is one of the biggest ski areas in Japan, but for some reason it still doesn’t get the same attention as places like Niseko or Hakuba. It’s made up of 18 different ski areas, all linked together on one lift pass, which basically means you can spend days riding here and still not cover everything. It’s properly big. It even hosted events during the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics, but it still feels quiet, spread out, and way more traditional than most of the big-name resorts.
The terrain is a huge part of why it’s so good. Because the place is so big, it caters to everyone without feeling crowded. There are wide open runs for beginners, long cruisy groomers, and enough steeper sections to keep things interesting if you’re a bit more experienced. And if you’re willing to move around a bit, there are heaps of sneaky powder stashes between zones that most people just don’t bother looking for.
One thing that really works in Shiga Kogen’s favour is the elevation. It sits higher than a lot of other resorts in Japan, which means the snow stays colder and lighter for longer. When those storms roll in off the Sea of Japan, you’re getting that proper dry Japow. And because the resort is so spread out, you’ve actually got a decent chance of still finding fresh snow well after everyone else has tracked things out. It also offers ski in and ski out hotel stays at the prince hotel which is a rare thing in Japan.
For a place this big, it’s also pretty affordable. Day passes are usually well under $100 USD, which is kind of crazy when you think about how much terrain you’re getting access to.
What I like most though is the feel of the place. You’ve got small local hotels, proper Japanese restaurants, and onsen nearby to warm up after riding. It just feels more real.
If you’re planning a trip to Japan and want somewhere big, with great snow, but without the chaos of the more famous tourist resorts, Shiga Kogen is a very solid option.
