At a glance - Big snow coming for Japan!

  • Potentially the biggest storm of the season

  • 5-10 days worth of moderate to heavy snow

  • Most resorts on the Western side of the country should do well

  • Nagano and Niigata will be the main focus, Hokkaido will also score

Why does Japan get so much snow?

Have you ever wondered why Japan gets so much more snow than everyone else?

Well it's due to something called sea effect snow, much like Utah and the great lakes get lake effect snow, sea effect snow works the same way!

Cold air blasts down from the coldest regions of the world in Siberia before picking up moisture over the seas of Japan. This moisture then hits the land mass in Japan where it rises over the land and dumps sweet Japanese snow.

In Japan this results in insane snowfalls with daily snow totals of up to 1 meter or 3 feet during the winter months!

This extreme snowfall results in some pretty unique customs, such as villages using onsen water to melt snow and yukikaki where communities join together to move snow as a group.
