Did you know you can ski just 1 hour from Tokyo?
Most people think you need to fly to Hokkaido or travel deep into the mountains to experience Japan’s famous powder, but one of the nest things about skiing in Japan is how close the snow actually is to Tokyo. In just over an hour, you can go from the city to a ski resort, stepping off a bullet train straight into the mountains. Welcome to Gala Yuzawa! It might be one of the most underrated ski day trips in the world.
Thanks to the Shinkansen, you can reach Gala Yuzawa in around 70 minutes, and the train stops at the resort. What makes it even better is the cost. A return Shinkansen ticket plus a day lift pass comes in at $90 USD for adults and roughly $45 USD for kids, which is incredibly cheap compared to most ski destinations around the world (I am looking at you USA Resorts!). For a world-class snow experience just over 1 hour from Tokyo its hard to beat.
Gala Yuzawa sits in Niigata Prefecture, one of Japan’s snowiest regions. Cold air from Siberia picks up moisture over the Sea of Japan and dumps huge amounts of snow when it hits the mountains, which is what creates the famous “Japow.” Yuzawa regularly gets massive snowfall each winter, and during strong storm cycles it’s common for resorts in the area to report deep fresh snow over multiple days. Right now, Niigata is being hit by heavy snow again, with Yuzawa and nearby resorts seeing serious accumulations that feel more like Hokkaido.
The resort itself is ideal for beginners and intermediate skiers with a layout that’s easy to navigate. That’s also what makes Gala Yuzawa especially good for families and kids. Everything is close together, there are excellent ski schools, easy rentals, and dedicated snow play areas where kids can enjoy the snow even if they’re not skiing all day. Parents don’t need to worry about long transfers or expensive multi-day trips. You can leave Tokyo in the morning, spend a full day on the snow, and be back in the city by dinner.
Gala Yuzawa is also surrounded by a cluster of major resorts like Naeba, Kagura and Iwappara, so if you have more time, you can easily explore multiple mountains in the same region. But even on its own, Gala Yuzawa delivers a surprisingly good ski expirience. For anyone looking for the easiest, most affordable and family-friendly way to experience Japanese powder from Tokyo, it’s hard to think of a better option.
